St. Michaels Manor has been owned by the Newling Ward family since 1965 and during this time has has been run by grandfather, father and son. The current General Manager, Olivier Delaunoy, joined the team in October 2009 bringing a wealth of experience from the hotel industry.

Located in the historic St Michael’s district of St. Albans, close to Veralum, with its 70 listed buildings, old inns and mills, the hotel is sited within five acres of its own manicured gardens and backs on to the river Ver and Verulamium Park. The Ver being the origin of the Roman name for St Alban’s; Veralum. The park continues up to the magnificent Abbey and is a mere 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

An original house can be traced to the site circa 1530, laid on medieval foundations, which themselves can be traced back to the 11th Century. Parts of the original flooring are still evident in the cellars today. The current house was built by John Gape in 1585, a well respected Tanner and prominent figure in the city, and continued to be owned by his descendants up until it was purchased by the Newling Wards

For the last four decades the family has taken pride in sympathetically restoring, renovating and improving the house and gardens to the highest standard.
